The best and solid impression was left by Nico Darmanin, who sang Ernesto on the opening night. His singing flowed strongly and freely like a mountain stream.
Maltese tenor Nico Darmanin sang his second premiere on the Estonian stage. A year ago, he shone as Romeo in Charles Gounod's opera "Romeo and Juliet". He has a bright and even voice with a beautiful sound. Darmanin's very moving and temperamental portrayal of Don Pasquale's nephew Ernesto contrasted well with the frozen environment around Don Pasquale.
Roméo, Nico Darmanin, has the ideal voice for the role: light, lyrical but with enough heft and brilliance for the more dramatic scenes… Darmanin was superb in the well-known ‘Ah! Lève-toi, soleil’, sung with a true glow, and elsewhere he was just as impressive.
The surprise for the evening was the Maltese tenor Nico Darmanin as Alberto. With a full bodied Mediterranean timbre voice demonstrated perfected Rossini singing, met with precise ornamentation and diction, pleasing with (committed) dedicated playfulness...was truly a refreshing change to the many white timbered voices from the anglo-american region.
Nico Darmanin's vital, Latinata tenor is already much in demand, and his buoyant vocalism and free-and-easy high notes brought his Rodolfo distinction.
