A live recording of Shostakovich's Babi Yar Symphony No.13 with the renowned Russian bass Alexey Tikhomirov is now available on CD on the CSO label.

Lead by the incomparable Maestro Riccardo Muti along with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and the Men of the Chicago Symphony Chorus, Tikhomirov made his mark on the history of this masterpiece:

"The richly expressive bass voice of Alexey Tikhomirov, whose notable restraint only enhanced the gravitas of Yevtushenko’s words." - Hedy Weiss, WTTW

Shostakovich's Sypmhony No. 13 commemorates an unspeakable tragedy of Babi Yar (Kyiv, Ukraine), where in 1941 over 33000 Jews were killed during Nazi occupation. The piece, a true monument to this tragic event, was completed in 1962 and premiered the same year in Moscow. With rare performances in the following years, the Symphony finally made it's way to the Western Europe when Riccardo Muti coducted it in Italian translation in Rome in 1970.

CSO’s opening performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 13 (Babi Yar) led by Riccardo Muti, took place on September 21, 2018 at Orchestra Hall, Chicago.
