Chicago Opera Theatre begins its 47-th season with a double bill of Rachmaninoff’s classics “Aleko” and a modern opera “Everest” by Joby Talbot and Gene Scheer.  In the pit leading the Orchestra is Lidiya Yankovskaya, Music Director of Chicago Opera Theater.

“Everest”  is an operatic take on the actual tragical events from 1996, when a group of mountaineers was caught in a blizzard on the slope of Mount Everest. The story was later described by Jon Krakauer in his book “Into Thin Air”.  Rachmaninoff’s “Aleko”, a story of free spirit, love and destroying jealousy, is tragical in its own way.

This season Lydiya Yankovskaya can be seen and heard conducting Freedom Ride with  Chicago Opera Theatre,  Edward Tulane at the Minnesota Opera, Shining Brow with the Arizona Opera and Don Giovanni at the Glimmerglass Festival New York. Lidia’s future engagements will take her to Europe for Jenufa at Vlaamse Opera and Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville as well as Don Giovanni at Seattle Opera.
